The study evaluated cars aged 5 to 10 years, a period when Tesla was pushing Model 3 production, even resorting to building cars in a tent in their California factory parking lot. This unconventional manufacturing approach may have contributed to the poor reliability ranking. With a 'Reliability Verdict' of just 31, Tesla fell behind brands like Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler. But here's the twist: Tesla's newer models seem to have turned things around, with Consumer Reports noting their improved reliability.
Now, this is where it gets interesting. At the top of the reliability rankings were Lexus and Toyota, scoring an impressive 77 and 73, respectively. These brands, according to Consumer Reports' Steven Elek, excel due to their conservative redesigns and incremental improvements. This approach ensures their cars remain reliable over time. Mazda, Honda, and Acura followed close behind, forming the top five most reliable used car brands.
But what about new cars? Well, Tesla isn't doing too badly there. It ranks 9th in new-car reliability, predicted to have a reliability score of 50, surpassing some established brands. However, fellow EV maker Rivian sits at the bottom of this list, indicating that the electric car market still has some reliability issues to iron out.
