This Saturday trade sees the Rockies gaining McCarthy in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Josh Grosz. McCarthy's performance last year might have been a bit of a letdown, but his previous stats hint at the potential to significantly boost the Rockies' offensive lineup.
With this strategic move, the Rockies' 40-man roster is now completely filled. This gives the team another solid option in the outfield, especially with their top three players from last year—Brenton Doyle, Jordan Beck, and Mickey Moniak—already returning.
But who else is in the mix? Beyond the established stars and McCarthy, the Rockies' 40-man roster also includes up-and-coming players like Yanquiel Fernández and Zac Veen, as well as versatile players Tyler Freeman and Troy Johnston, and the yet-to-debut Sterlin Thompson.
McCarthy, at 28 years old, was a first-round draft pick by Arizona back in 2018, coming from the University of Virginia. He made his debut in 2021 and really shined in 2022, boasting a .283 batting average, a .342 on-base percentage, and a .427 slugging percentage, resulting in a .769 OPS and a 2.4 bWAR. This impressive performance earned him a fourth-place finish in the National League Rookie of the Year race. He's also versatile, capable of playing all three outfield positions. His career was on an upward trajectory, especially in 2023 and 2024, where he hit .285 with 1.7 bWAR in 142 games.
But here's where it gets controversial... McCarthy's performance took a dip in 2025. He struggled at the start of the season, going hitless in his first 24 at-bats and only batting .073 before being sent to Triple-A Reno on April 19. He improved in the second half after being recalled, but it wasn't enough to make him indispensable for Arizona.
Over his five-year MLB career, McCarthy has a batting average of .260, an on-base percentage of .324, and a slugging percentage of .381. He has hit 46 doubles, 20 triples, 24 home runs, and driven in 139 runs. Speed is also a key part of his game, with 83 stolen bases and 20 triples under his belt. His sprint speed in 2025 was clocked at 29.9 feet per second, ranking him among the fastest in the majors, specifically fifth, among players with at least 200 plate appearances.
In letting go of Grosz, the Rockies are parting ways with a player acquired in the Ryan McMahon trade with the Yankees last July. Grosz had a 5.87 ERA in seven starts for High-A Spokane after the trade. The other pitcher from that deal, Griffin Herring, showed promise, finishing 2025 with a 2.40 ERA in seven starts for Spokane. Herring is expected to be tested in Double-A this season.
