In a bold step towards revitalizing urban mobility, Leeds is about to embark on a ground-breaking £12m initiative aimed at enhancing walking and cycling routes throughout the city. This substantial project is set to kick off in January and is designed to create better connections between the northern and southern parts of the city center.
The local council describes this £12.76 million endeavor as a "transformative" approach that promises to reshape how residents navigate the area. The plan includes the introduction of dedicated cycle lanes, wider sidewalks, and adjustments to the existing traffic patterns, all aimed at prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists over vehicles.
In the northern section of the city center, the aim is to expand public spaces at the expense of car infrastructure. This means allowing for cozy outdoor cafés, reducing parking availability, and enhancing pedestrian crossings to facilitate easier movement for those on foot.
Moving further south, streets in the vicinity of Leeds Minster and Shears Yard will receive significant upgrades. A new two-way segregated cycle track is on the horizon, which will involve the permanent removal of one traffic lane to accommodate safer cycling routes.
Some locals have expressed their enthusiasm regarding these changes. Rachel Lindsay shared her excitement on X, stating, "Thank you for continuing to invest in cycling. I can't wait to see the completion of this project!" However, not everyone is on board with the current focus on cycling infrastructure. The announcement has reignited discussions about the need for improved public transportation and accessibility in Leeds, especially in light of delays in the £2.5 billion tram project, which has now been pushed back to the late 2030s.
Ryan Alexander Pride voiced his frustration on Facebook: "The center of Leeds is becoming less and less accessible. It's a nightmare trying to rely on trains or buses to arrive on time. If our transport system is unreliable and the roads are inadequate, what’s the point of it all?"
Chris Johns echoed these sentiments, remarking, "It seems like anything other than transit is prioritized in Leeds."
Despite these criticisms, Leeds City Council insists that the scheme is a crucial part of broader efforts to enhance safety and accessibility within the city’s transport framework. Councillor Jonathan Pryor, who oversees the council’s economy, transport, and sustainable development initiatives, affirmed, "Leeds City Links represents the next significant transformation for Leeds City Centre. It will foster safer, greener, and more inclusive environments that promote walking and cycling. This aims to help residents navigate the city sustainably while aligning with our Vision Zero 2040 strategy, which strives to eliminate road fatalities and serious injuries as we support the city’s growth ambitions."
Vision Zero 2040 sets a bold objective to eradicate all traffic-related deaths and severe injuries across West Yorkshire by the year 2040.
Scheduled to commence on January 5 and expected to last over 12 months, this project will entail several road closures and detours. For instance, Great George Street will be temporarily shut down between Dudley Way and Woodhouse Lane starting January 26 for approximately 11 weeks. Additionally, the road behind Leeds Town Hall will be narrowed to a single lane.
Funding for this ambitious project comes from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, which the council claims is part of a larger commitment to improve public transportation, walking, and cycling throughout England.
