A heartwarming comeback story unfolded at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, where Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani, reunited after a four-year hiatus, claimed their second WTA 1000 title together. But here's where it gets interesting: their journey back to the top wasn't without its challenges.
The pair, who previously played together from 2020 to 2023, experienced a setback when Stefani suffered a major knee injury at the 2021 US Open. Despite this, they managed to win the WTA 250 in Chennai in 2022 and even participated in the 2023 Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami. However, after their respective partnerships ended in 2025, they found their way back to each other, and their hard work paid off in Dubai.
Their triumph in Dubai was especially meaningful for Dabrowski, a breast cancer survivor, who dedicated the win to the father of her best friend, who is currently battling cancer. The road to the final was not an easy one; three of their four matches leading up to the final were decided by a match tiebreak, and they even saved three match points against Giuliana Olmos and Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals.
In the final, they faced Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva, and their strong start set the tone for the match. After saving two break points in their first service game, they went on to win nine of the next ten games, establishing a dominant lead. Despite a late comeback attempt by Siegemund and Zvonareva, Dabrowski and Stefani held their ground and sealed the victory.
"I'm thrilled to have won our first title here in Dubai," Stefani expressed. "A WTA 1000 title is a rare achievement, so I'm overjoyed with this win and proud of our team's efforts."
When asked about their strategy, Stefani revealed, "We were locked in from the start. We knew they would make us work for every point, and that's exactly what happened in the first set. Gaby's patience and our ability to set up points were crucial. They didn't give us anything, so we had to keep pushing."
This win marks Dabrowski's sixth title at the WTA 1000 level and Stefani's fourth. As a result, Dabrowski will reach a new career-high ranking of World No. 2 in the PIF WTA Rankings on Monday. Meanwhile, Siegemund and Zvonareva, who won the WTA Finals together in 2023, were contesting their first final as a pair.
"Rankings come and go, but what matters to me is having a strong partnership and consistently performing well in tournaments," Dabrowski shared. "That's always been my goal, and I'm delighted to have achieved it. But I couldn't have done it without the support of my team."
So, what do you think? Is the power of partnership the key to success in tennis? Or is it all about individual skill and strategy? Let's discuss in the comments!
