This project marks a significant step forward in the development of the Pointe-Noire-Brazzaville-Bangui-N'Djamena (CD13) multimodal transport corridor, a vital artery for regional connectivity. The foundation stone was laid on December 10, 2025, signaling a commitment to strengthen trade and improve the lives of people in Central Africa.
President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic, alongside Prime Minister Félix Moloua, key government officials, and representatives from the African Development Bank, development partners, and local leaders, spearheaded the ceremony. President Touadéra emphasized the nation's dedication to utilizing its resources for growth and economic exchange within the Central African sub-region, stating that the port represents 'a decisive turning point' for the country. He highlighted the project's potential to bring 'growth, hope and opportunities'.
The Mongoumba port is set to become a critical link in river transportation between the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. This strategic positioning is designed to enhance regional connectivity, which, in turn, is expected to reduce supply delays and inflation. Furthermore, the project aims to attract private sector investment and streamline cargo management between river and road transport. The new infrastructure is also projected to create job opportunities and stimulate growth in the logistics and financial services sectors.
The African Development Fund, the concessional lending arm of the African Development Bank Group, is backing this ambitious project with a substantial $282 million grant. This investment underscores the Bank Group's leading role in infrastructure financing across the continent. Boye Kissagne, the interim Country Manager of the African Development Bank, highlighted the port's significance as a symbol of resilience and determination to overcome challenges.
Construction of the Mongoumba port is scheduled to take 24 months and will be undertaken by the Italian-Egyptian Selip-Rowad consortium, under the supervision of the SCET Tunisie / Lege Engineering consortium.
The African Development Bank Group is currently involved in financing 20 projects in the Central African Republic, totaling $583 million. These projects are primarily focused on transport (51%), water and sanitation (21%), and agriculture (12%), with the remaining investments spread across sectors such as energy, social initiatives, governance, and finance (16%).
