At the very beginning of her career, a clip from Melvyn Bragg hailed her as Britain's first female stand-up comedian. While not entirely accurate – as some other amazing women paved the way – it's still shocking to realize how few women were given a platform in the 1980s. When her sketch show, As Seen on TV, premiered in 1985, there were doubts that a woman, especially a northern woman, could lead a comedy program. But the show was a smash! The show featured Wood, Julie Walters, and Celia Imrie, their performances filled with a contagious, giggling energy.
For those of us who grew up with Victoria Wood, Becoming Victoria Wood is a real eye-opener. Her stand-up routines in the 1980s were groundbreaking, fearlessly tackling subjects like tampons and cellulite. But here's where it gets controversial... Wood's personal life was marked by a lonely childhood, a dismissive mother, and insecurities about her weight. Sadly, she faced some truly awful press coverage that focused on her size.
