Oscar Piastri, the talented F1 driver, is confident that McLaren will uphold their commitment to fairness and equality as they head into the 2026 season. This assurance comes despite the recent success of his teammate, Lando Norris, who narrowly secured the title this year.
Piastri, who led the championship for more days than any other driver in 2025, ultimately finished third, just 13 points behind Norris and 11 behind Max Verstappen. McLaren's efforts to maintain a balanced playing field, under their 'Papaya Rules' policy, were often questioned, with accusations of favoritism towards Norris.
However, Piastri remains unwavering in his belief that McLaren will continue to provide an equal opportunity for both drivers. He emphasizes that Norris' championship win doesn't alter their dynamic, stating, "He's still Lando Norris. It's not like he's become Superman."
"I expect full fairness and equality from the team moving forward," Piastri asserts. "I have no doubts that McLaren will maintain their high standards of fairness. Lando had an exceptional season, and he ultimately outperformed me. But that doesn't change the fact that we are both highly skilled drivers."
Piastri acknowledges that McLaren's pursuit of equality created some tense moments, especially when both drivers were so closely matched. "It's not an easy task to manage two drivers who are so evenly matched, especially when both are fighting for the top titles," he explains. "But these challenges have made us better drivers. Pushing each other to the limit has been uncomfortable at times, but it's ultimately led to our growth."
Looking ahead, Piastri is optimistic about the upcoming season and the potential for further improvements. "We've had productive discussions throughout the year, and we'll continue to refine our strategies during the off-season. McLaren gave us every opportunity to fairly compete for the world championship, and that's all any driver could ask for."
So, will McLaren's fairness policy continue to be a point of contention or a model for other teams to follow? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: the rivalry between Piastri and Norris is set to heat up even more in 2026.
